- lives in Capri, Italy
- hardworking, example: she cleaned Thomas Wilson's room and cooked his meals everyday (pg25)
- helpful, example: "Assunta helped him..." (pg27) - gave Thomas Wilson food
- kind, sympathetic, example: "she and her husband let him live in the woodshed behind their house" (pg27), sent Wilson to hospital
- Lives in England
- 1913, visiting his friend Thomas Wilson in Capir
- First, narrator thinks Wilson's life on Capri is dull - curious, ask many questions
- later...he is shocked that Wilson has such a hard life after his money runs out
- Finally, he can understand why Wilson finds it hard to kill himself, eventhough life is hard - understanding
- concerned + sympathetic - asked what happened to Wilson
